Heading to St. Louis today for work. As sad as I am to leave Little Biggins (Barkley) every time I go on the road for work, I do love this job and the traveling that's involved. Thank goodness I have friends and family willing to help me with him so I can keep him and keep this job. I don't know what I'd do without either one.
Another Monday! I don't think today will get me down except that I can't follow the Olympic coverage from work. But watching my favorite sport, swimming, last night had me thinking about my time as a swimmer. My brother used to sing this song a lot. In fact, the whole lot of us were pretty obsessed with The Carpenters. Swimmers have always been pretty weird. We were no exception. I've thought a lot about my fellow PSTers the last few days. I miss them all. I have some amazing memories of growing up and most all of them involve a few people who enriched my life. It may be time for a reunion.
I love exploring places I've never been. I love to watch scenery as I drive down the interstate. I love new restaurants.
But Columbus, Georgia doesn't have much. We flew into Atlanta and then rented a car to get to Columbus. It's about and hour and a half away. Southwest doesn't fly into Columbus so it was a sacrifice we made in the name of SW Rapid Rewards points. But getting here was completely uneventful. As uneventful as the West Kentucky Parkway...without all the potholes.
I ventured out on foot for food around 9pm. I was a little scared that everything would be closed given that it was Sunday but I lucked out. My hotel is in an outdoor shopping district so there are lots of chain restaurants. I hurried over to Fridays and quickly figured out that they still have smoking sections in their restaurants and sure enough, the bar is a smoking section and that's where you place to go orders. I sat there for about 30 minutes and I could feel my hair soaking up the smoke.
I hate to be THAT person - that nonsmoker who hates on smokers. I mean, no one was blowing it on me. However, after you get used to YEARS of smoke-free public areas, the concept of "Smoking or Nonsmoking?" is so foreign. I can't remember the last time I had to take a nighttime shower to wash the smokey smell off of me. It was all so...weird.
So I guess Columbus isn't doing well so far on my list of favorite places I've traveled for work. It'll be hard to beat Baltimore/DC and Austin and undoubtedly Seattle will put them all to shame in September. But I'm willing to give Georgia and the people a couple more chances. Except for the guy who hit on me at the bar (when I looked like a mess after 8 hours of traveling and just wanted my damn cheesecake), everyone's been pretty nice down here in the heart of the south!
Some songs just remind you of the past. This one reminds me of a friend who was a huge Styx fan. He was on summer staff with me. That summer was amazing. It's hard to compare that summer to this one because the circumstances are so different. I do miss those times though. However, I do enjoy this adult paycheck. :)
Speaking of my new paycheck, I'm know I'm going to love this new job. The work, the traveling, everything. But it feels good to be home. There's something so familiar about your own bed, your dog curled up on your shoulder, regular food in your cabinets. This week I'm home in Louisville and then next week I'll be in Austin for the work week as well as for the weekend for my Grandmother's 80th birthday. That just happened to work out perfectly. All I had to do was ask if I could extend the dates of my trip which was no problem. This week I'll be focusing on doing my laundry and then repacking as well as keeping my apartment clean. It sucks to come home to a dirty place so that will be one of my goals. I think this job is all about routines. That, I can do.
This post was written early before my internet was shut off in Lexington. I'm a planner. I can expect that the past weekend was tiring and stressful with the cleaning and unpacking. But I hope that I gave my mom a special Mother's Day yesterday and that she had a pretty stress-free day. Today I'm getting my Louisville licenses and my internet connected. Then I may need to buy some dress clothes for work. It should be a good day. T-minus two days until orientation for my new job!
Also, happy birthday to Sara! You are wonderful, dear!
This song reminds me of freshman year at UK. My best friend and I LOVED boybands but my roommate didn't so we gave her this one, the worst one. So I thought it would be appropriate as another school year ends and summer begins.
It's important to remember the past with an eye on the future.
Even though it's Monday, I wanted a really upbeat song for today. Maybe it's the scent of my future in the air or the fact that Pinterest finally sent me an email saying I could join (and I spent the weekend looking for ideas for my new apartment). Whatever it is, I'm feeling really optimistic today and I feel like savoring the feeling.
Today is the "early bird" deadline for our capstone rough drafts. If you know me, you know it is always my goal to adhere to these kinds of deadlines. Instead of waiting to turn in my draft a week later, I've pounded it out and will turn it in today. That will leave me two weeks to revise, create my defense presentation, and practice. I will defend the paper on April 19th. I just need to get through these next three weeks.
Last night, as I was sitting down to concentrate on my homework, my twitter and facebook feeds exploded a little with updates about the Lion King playing on ABC Family. It was one of many times I was sad that I don't have cable TV anymore. It's probably better considering my homework MUST get done. Still, I thought playing this song this morning was appropriate.
